SAUNA 81°C
About SAUNA 81°C
Finnish sauna expertise, custom design and a belief that the right heat matters more than the hottest heat. SAUNA 81°C is by Sketches & Patios, led by Robert Ahonen.
Why 81
81 is nine times nine. In many traditions, nine represents completion, longevity and good fortune — and 81 is that luck squared. The Tao Te Ching has 81 chapters. The number has a quiet symmetry of its own: its digits add up to nine, and its square root is nine.
In a Finnish sauna, 81 is where it all comes together. Finns often heat their saunas to around 80–90 °C. Just beyond 80, the warmth feels unmistakably Finnish, while löyly — the steam released when water meets hot stones — can still land soft rather than sharp.
Hot enough to reset you. Gentle enough to stay, talk and throw another ladle.
Not the hottest sauna. The right one. 81 °C.
The Hannunvaakuna — our sign of protection

Our logo is the hannunvaakuna, known in English as Saint John’s Arms. It is one of the oldest protective signs in the North: the same looped square appears on ancient Nordic artefacts, and for centuries Finns carved and painted it over doorways, on barns and on the cups and bowls they ate from, to keep evil spirits and bad luck away from the farmstead — the cluster of buildings where the sauna always stood.
The sauna was the most sacred of those buildings. It was where children were born, where the sick were healed and where the dead were washed, and löyly, the steam rising from the stones, was believed to carry the spirit of life itself. It is the same old Finnish world that the Kalevala grew from.
The symbol’s name comes from juhannus, Midsummer and the feast of Saint John, when it was part of the celebrations. Today Finland still uses it to mark places worth stopping for.
We put it on every sauna we build: an old sign of protection, over the room that has always needed it most.
